The Beatles and the Lovin' Spoonful

Most likely I will not be able to update this blog tomorrow (Thursday) because I will be at a concert by my favorite non-Beatles 1960's singer:  John Sebastian.     John Sebastian was the lead singer for the Lovin' Spoonful and I have always enjoyed their music.    I have been informed that John has a lot of throat troubles and is unable to sing very much, but his shows are still fun as he retells stories from the 1960's.   I am excited to be there, if nothing else to just say that I saw John Sebastian in person.

So this got me thinking about the Lovin' Spoonful and the Beatles.   Sure they were contemporaries, but they lived in totally different countries and played different styles of music.    However, the Beatles were fans of the folksy Spoonful.

On April 18, 1966 the Lovin' Spoonful played the Marquee Club in London and George and John were in the audience.  By this time the Lovin' Spoonful had made quite a name for themselves and had many hits under their belt.    Interestingly enough, Eric Clapton was also at this show and he and George met for the 2nd time and supposedly it was during this time that the two guitarist started a friendship.

This photo of George and John talking to two members of the Lovin' Spoonful must have been taken after their performance at the Marquee Club.

Paul McCartney was also a fan.   His song from Revolver, "Good Day Sunshine" he said was directly influenced by the Spoonful's hit song, "Daydream."     And this photo shows McCartney walking someone with a Lovin' Spoonful album in hand.
