George visits the White House

40 years ago (yesterday) George Harrison became the first Beatle to meet the President of the United States---or in the spirit of this blog, I should saw the first President of the United States to meet a Beatle (for real).   So in celebration of this, I thought I would post some photos and this from the July-December 1994 double issue of The Harrison Alliance.

George, his dad Harry, Billy Preston, Tom Scott and Ravi Shankar lunched at the White House on the afternoon of December 13, 1974 at the invitation of President Gerald Ford's son, Jack.  George was the first and only ex-Beatle to visit the White House.

Jack Ford said he invited George and friends to the White House because he had been invited  backstage at the Salt Lake City show.  "They were so hospitable to me I wanted to return the favor," he said.  Ford was attending school at Utah State in 1974.

A lunch of vegetables and beef was served in the solarium while George's Dark Horse album was played in the background.  It was reported George stuck to the vegetables.

After lunch the group had a tour of the White House mansion guided part of the way by the President's daughter, Susan.

Tom Scott recalled they were brought to a conference room outside the Oval Office to wait until the President became available.   "We walked into the presidents' conference room with the oval table and the chair and signs saying, 'Secretary of Defense,''Secretary of this and that' and we sat down in the chairs, clowning around."  Scott went on to say that George and Billy did some jamming on a piano in the room, but then it was time to meet the President.

George and the rest of the group met and spoke with President Gerald Ford in the Oval Office for about 20 minutes.  George gave the President an Om button, and in return the President presented him with a WIN (Whip Inflation Now) button.

Commenting on his meeting with President Ford, George said, "He seemed very relaxed.  He was much easier to meet than I would expect.  you can imagine the number of things he's got on his plate."  When asked if the President had heard his work in the past, he replied, "No, he's not all that familiar with my music."

Someone named Sandy on twitter posted this photo stating that when her mom was a young, George Harrison had breakfast with her and here is a photo.    I am not sure what this is all about, but I just know that it is awesome sauce.

Help me if you can

I feel extremely uncomfortable doing this because I do not want to make upset with me and it has already caused a bit of controversy.

However, I have ran this blog for 5 and a half years and I have never asked for money from anyone for any reason.   And so now I am asking if you are able to help me out a little.

As I reported, I am working on writing a Beatles book about the Beatles in St. Louis.   I want this book to be nice and have the best photos and information I can get.    However, I am finding that photos are extremely expensive (and yes, I am sure that I am getting ripped off) and the two photos I really, really want are more than what I can afford.   So I started a campaign with Go Fund me to start raising the funds for the photos.

I understand that many people, especially this time of year,  have a hard time with money and no one HAS to donate or anything.   But if anyone donates $25 or more I will send him/her a free copy of the book in 2016.

Again...if this offends you or you think I am insane, just keep scrolling for the Beatles photos.  You can donate as little as $5.00.     Thanks again for your support.

Peace and Love,
Sara

All I want for Christmas is a Beatle!

Have you listened to the holiday classic, "All I want for Christmas is a Beatle?" yet this season?  Well---go ahead and give it a listen.    And here I found a photo in a scrapbook of the lads with the singer of this song, Dora Bryan.  Unfortunately, I the scrapbook was hard to scan otu of and George and John's head got cut off a bit.

Here is what it says under the photo:

Look what Santa left for actress Dora Bryan -- the Christmas present to beat all Christmas presents!  For weeks, Dora has been singing "All I want for Christmas  is a Beatle"  But she didn't really expect to get even one.   In fact she was quite happy, thank you, when the song made the Top Twenty.   Then Santa came (at least that's was Dora says) and standing before here were all four Beatles:  George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.  Who can blame Dora for trying to crush the Beatles?  Dora, who is appearing in a West End revue called "Six of One" is not the only one to have heard from Santa.  Nearly 8,000 children have had a special message.  The children had sent letters to Santa Claus in Reindeerland and Snowland.  They got their reply--with a special postmark on cards form the Post-master General, Mr. Reginald Bevins.   The cars provided free by the Post Office said, "How nice of you to write.  My gallant reindeers are ready to gallop with me to visit everyone we can.  Be fast asleep."  Yesterday saw the start of the great Christmas rush.  It also brought a huge shopping spree with housewives smiling over the supermarket war in oven-ready turkeys.  Sainsburry's oven-ready turkeys were selling at 3s 10d lb and the Fine Fare chain's price was down from 4s. 4d lb to 3s 9d lb plus gift stamps--so shoppers found it a buyer's market.  Housewives got 12 lb turkeys for less than 50s.

Rock and roll Ringo!

A big time congratulations goes out to Ringo Starr on his upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame!!   When you think of all of the famous bands who's drummer credits Ringo for inspiring them to drum and the contribution Ringo has made to rock and roll music, it is shame that he didn't get in there ages ago.

And you know what?  If you disagree...I don't want to hear it!    I think Ringo is an amazing drummer and I enjoy his live shows.   He was the first Beatle to have a #1 hit single after the Beatles broke up.

So yeah...I am pretty proud of our Richy and celebrate this accomplishment with him.   In celebration I am sharing some photos my Beatle pal, Susan Ryan took on June 20, 2005 when Ringo was on the Early Show.   She was allowed to take photos without a flash.   She went to the John Stewart show today and saw Paul, but alas no photos were allowed.    But she graciously shares these Ringo photos with us!  Thanks to you Susan!   Make sure you look on the side of this blog for information about her Beatles tour of New York City!
